How to Fix the "Could Not Extract Text" Error

A simple guide to make your scanned PDFs work with Gameshow Generator

Did you see this error?
"We could not extract text from this PDF. This usually means the PDF is scanned or image-based."

Why Did This Happen?

There are two types of PDFs, and they look identical from the outside:

📄

Text-Based PDF

Created from Word, Google Docs, or similar programs. Contains real, readable text.

📷

Scanned PDF

Created from a scanner or camera. It's just a picture of text - like a photograph.

Gameshow Generator needs to read the actual text in your document to create questions. When your PDF is scanned, it's like trying to read a photograph of a book - the computer just sees an image, not words it can understand.

💡 Quick Test

Open your PDF and try to highlight some text with your mouse. If you can select individual words, it's text-based and should work. If you can only select the whole page like a picture, it's scanned and needs to be converted.

OCR: Teaching Computers to Read Pictures

OCR stands for "Optical Character Recognition." It's technology that looks at pictures of text and converts them into real, readable text. Think of it as teaching your computer to read a photograph.

You'll need to run your PDF through an OCR tool before uploading it to Gameshow Generator. Below are three free ways to do this - pick whichever is easiest for you.

Choose Your Method

📋

Adobe Acrobat

Best if you already have Adobe Acrobat Pro installed on your computer (not the free Reader).

  1. 1 Open your scanned PDF in Adobe Acrobat
  2. 2 Click on "Tools" in the top menu
  3. 3 Find and click "Scan & OCR"
  4. 4 Click "Recognize Text", then select "In This File"
  5. 5 Click the blue "Recognize Text" button and wait for it to process
  6. 6 Save the file by clicking File then Save
  7. 7 Upload the saved PDF to Gameshow Generator

iLovePDF (Free Online Tool)

Best if you don't have Google or Adobe. Works right in your web browser with no account needed.

  1. 1 Go to ilovepdf.com/ocr-pdf in your web browser
  2. 2 Click the big "Select PDF file" button
  3. 3 Choose your scanned PDF from your computer
  4. 4 Click the "Apply OCR" button
  5. 5 Wait for the processing to complete (this may take a minute)
  6. 6 Click "Download" to save your new searchable PDF
  7. 7 Upload this new PDF to Gameshow Generator
Note About Free Limits

iLovePDF allows a limited number of free conversions per day. If you have many PDFs to convert, Google Drive is a better option since it has no limits.

After Converting Your PDF

Once you've converted your PDF using any of the methods above:

  1. 1 Open the newly converted PDF and try to highlight some text - it should work now!
  2. 2 Go back to Gameshow Generator
  3. 3 Upload the new converted PDF (not the original scanned one)
  4. 4 Your game should generate successfully!

FAQ

Will OCR convert my text perfectly?

OCR is very accurate with clear, typed text. However, handwritten notes, unusual fonts, or blurry scans may not convert as well. For best results, use high-quality scans of typed or printed documents.

Is my document kept private?

Google Drive and Adobe keep your files private in your account. For online tools like iLovePDF, files are typically deleted from their servers within a few hours. If your document contains sensitive information, Google Drive or Adobe are safer options.

Can I just type out my content instead?

Absolutely! If you have a short document or prefer not to deal with PDF conversion, you can use Gameshow Generator's "Manual Entry" option to type or paste your content directly and create custom questions.

I converted my PDF but it still doesn't work. What now?

A few things to check: (1) Make sure you downloaded and uploaded the NEW converted PDF, not the original. (2) Try a different conversion method - sometimes one works better than others. (3) If the original scan is very faded, blurry, or at an angle, try scanning the document again with better lighting and positioning.

How can I avoid this problem in the future?

Whenever possible, export documents directly to PDF from programs like Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or PowerPoint. These PDFs will always have real, extractable text. If you must scan a document, look for an "OCR" or "Searchable PDF" option in your scanner's settings.

Tips for Better Scans

If you frequently need to scan documents, these tips will help you get better results:

  • Use at least 300 DPI (dots per inch) resolution for clear text
  • Make sure the document is flat and well-lit with no shadows
  • Keep the scanner glass clean for crisp images
  • Many scanners have a built-in "OCR" or "Searchable PDF" option - turn it on!
  • If using a phone camera, use a document scanning app (like Adobe Scan or Microsoft Lens) instead of the regular camera
